Rutland, Co. Carlow

The stone is not now on a castle or church but in the private residence of Tom Fitzharris. Measuring approx .5m by 1m, this is a substantial stone and most likely came from the nearby ruined castle…Bennekerry.

April 08 Visited the site today and was lucky to find Mr Fitzharris at home. He was able to add to our information on the sheela by telling me that it first appeared there in his father’s time, circa 1945 and that it was found in a river near a monastic site in Offaly.

Starting from Castledermot along the Carlow Road (R448). At about 7k look out for Toughers Restaurant and take the next turn left. Pass the remains of the Greenacres pub then straight on through a crossroads to a large STOP sign. Turn right here and a few metres further on note 2 new houses with black painted fences on your right and immediately after a narrow driveway to the sheela location.
Coming from Carlow would be the reverse of these directions...nearly.
